Cultural Awareness Packages

The Cultural Awareness Packages was produced to assist Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Parramatta to meet requirements of Aboriginal Education Procedures. (These Procedures are can be found on OSCAR on the catholic education website.)

The Cultural Awareness Packages were launched in 2012 this was put together by Jarara for all schools in the Diocese to give school direct access to Aboriginal Educational Resources across Primary and High School.

The Primary Package includes;

Primary – Resources to strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cross-curriculum perspectives in teachers programs.

  • Merana Eorah DVD – a local Aboriginal perspective (the Darug Nation)
  • Journey with the Aboriginal Stations Of the Cross – recognising Aboriginal students spirituality. The package also includes an alternate set of prayers which reflect a traditional conventional Catholic understandings of God and Jesus. 
  • Into Unknown Territory – Big river country of the Northern Territory
  • How I Got Here – Mount Druitt Life Stories Series
  • Example of Acknowledgement of Country
  • Working with Aboriginal Communities – A guide to Community Consultation and Protocols – Board of Studies NSW 2008

Resources to improve the educational outcomes for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in school:

  • Yarning Strong – Literature materials exploring what it is like being an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander living in Australia today.
  • Pause Prompt and Praise – Parent Training DVD
  • Guide to developing Personalised Learning Plans for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
  • Byallawa – School Fee Co-Contribution Scheme 
  • Choosing a Catholic School for Your Child – Council of Catholic School Parents NSW/ACT. 

The Secondary package includes;

Materials to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cross – Curriculum perspectives in teacher’s Programs.

All staff/ Schools are to ensure that Aboriginal * students cultural heritage is a valued part of school life.



Principals are to:

  • Ensure that there is evidence of Aboriginal cross-curriculum perspectives in teachers programs
  • Evidence the implementation of programs aimed to improve the educational outcomes for
  • Aboriginal students enrolled in Catholic schools in the Diocese of Parramatta.
