The Jarara Indigenous Education unit has four Aboriginal teachers, four Non-Aboriginal teachers, four Aboriginal Education Assistants (AEAs), one Family and Community Liaison assistant and one clerical assistant that work across all schools and networks in the Parramatta Diocese. Their purpose is to serve schools in the provision of quality Catholic education to enhance the learning outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students by:

  • improving the delivery of Literacy and Numeracy programs within schools through in-class support with small group work as well as specific programs developed to assist student outcomes
  • developing and delivering flexible and creative educational design for meeting the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal students K-12
  • collaborating to identify, build upon community involvement, share and transfer innovative cultural learning frameworks and practices
  • applying specialist pedagogical (ways of teaching) and cultural knowledge and expertise to build capacity and sustainability for Aboriginal students and their families within our system of schools
  • working with teachers to support ongoing professional learning to ensure the learning needs and aspirations of Aboriginal students are met
  • modelling a personal openness to new professional learning and flexible ways of learning
  • negotiating and supporting connections between Aboriginal families, communities and schools
  • managing, overseeing and evaluating the Aboriginal education program
  • preparing reports for the Commonwealth Government for the Catholic Education Commission.
